The Small House by Unemori Architects:

“The small house which the married couple and their child live stands at the densely populated area in Tokyo. Though the neighboring houses is very close, I aimed to design the house which exceed the physical narrowness living at the city.

I laid out the 4m×4m building that as small as I can at the center of site area 34m2 and made some space for flowing of light and wind around it. And by making the space, it’s possible to avoid setback regulation and it has the 9m high volume like a tower.

The inside is simple structure what is separated by the 4 floor boards and is jointed by spiral stairway. Especially, by making some extremely thin floor boards (thickness 70mm) , the up and down floor boards got close and connected the whole space of the house without a break.

The space of around the house is useful to let light and wind in.

The wall of the rooms borders the outside, so I put windows in the best position that harmonizing with its surroundings. And the window is so big against the small room, every time the window opens or closes, the inside view dramatically changes. Especially, at the second and third floor there is a large hinged door each room, if it is opened, the inside of the room is enveloped in light and wind as if you are outside.

By making the thin floor boards for connecting with their life and making the large windows that are opened toward the city, I aimed to exceed the segmentation, for example the up stair and the down stair, the inside and the outside, a building and the town, etc… to broaden the whole image of a house.”

11 Boxes by Keiji Ashizawa Design:

“In order to maximize space of the site, a simple construction method was chosen. Eleven steel frame boxes are formed using steel angles and used as the main structure, while external wall panels are attached on without the need of any additional structure.

The size of the steel boxes needed to be considered carefully since each had to fit on a truck to be transported to site. These boxes are then joined together with high tension bolts on site.

Though the central span holds the main structural strength of the building, the circulation staircase is intentionally positioned there to operate as an earthquake-proof element as well as to rationalize the plan of the house.”

House Design Inspired from Traditional Japanese Landscape Architecure by ARCHITECTON

ARCHITECTON is Japan based architecture who designing this house. This is small house design located in Tokyo – Japan, designed with inspiration from traditional Japanese landscape architecure. The site is surrounded by the adjacent houses and a retaining wall, which produces the precondition of internality from where some natural plants on the different levels are viewed. Into such a semi-enclosed space the architects inserted a pipe-screened translucent volume to define a loose territory which could be a weak flame. Through this screen the interior space expands outwards and the exterior comes inwards simultaneously. Eventually this space can be felt both extensive and intimate.

This mechanism of differentiation in distances is referred to as the ‘Shakkei’ method in Japanese landscape design, which traditionally means borrowing scenery in the distance to combine with the nearby garden in front of the dwelling, which are usually divided by a low wall. This wall acts to draw the scenery in the distance toward the front garden and also expand the front garden far away, finally combining the two.

The screen of ‘HOJO’ causes the same effect. In this way the uniqueness of ‘HOJO’ is characterised by its nesting boxes structure, the ambiguous boundary conditions in multiple layers, the reduction or enlargement of the notion of scale and the variety of light conditions are resolved through the modern frame structure, reconfigured as a 3-dimensional representation of these conditions.

Japanese Small Zen House Plan – and Maximizes a Small Lot

With its black and attractive this Small Zen House Plan will be the right choice for you who like a simple home design with interior design is simple but good quality. The Oh House will have architecture aficionados oh-ing and ah-ing. Designed by Japanese company Atelier Tekuto, this plant is a small modern house, situated in a small town very irregular shape that dictated its unusual shape and vertical dimensions. The main objective of this house for six was to incorporate a parking space – which has proved more difficult than it sounds, thanks to the lot size. To make room for a car, architect placed at the main entrance in the basement. At the entrance, a staircase leads you to areas of the main house. The interior open space with stylish furniture and a suspension that leaves the free space is limited. Parts like the dining table and the hanging of several built-ins are not only functional, but they have a contemporary aesthetic that works wonders in the modern, minimalist interior. This Japanese micro home is called the Near House for a reason - its neighboring buildings are so close that you can touch them. Located in Tokyo, this wood frame two-story house was designed by Mount Fuji Architects Studio for a unique, tiny L-shaped lot that is very narrow at the street and a bit wider in the back. Tight quarters are not unusual in these parts, so this one-bedroom micro home makes the best use of the 66 square-meter lot, and even has room for a private courtyard in the center to help bring in the sun.

The tiny urban home features a total floor area of 75 sq meters (807 sq ft) and is composed of two volumes — the gate house and the main house. The gate house is a slim, two-story volume located adjacent to the street that serves as the entrance to the home. A narrow passageway sits on the right side of the house, providing direct access to the courtyard. The bottom floor of the gatehouse acts as an entry, while the top floor, accessed via a wooden ladder, serves as a study with built-in bookshelves.

In between the two volumes is a small courtyard, which provides the owners with a private space to sit and reflect out of doors, and the courtyard also pulls natural daylight into the buildings despite the narrow site. In the back is a larger volume that holds the bedroom and bathroom along with the living and dining space. The bedroom and the house’s only bathroom sit on the ground floor, while the living/dining area is up top. Construction on the Near House was completed in 2010.
